Did you ever wonder what happens to the stuff around it when something gets very hot or really cold? You may have even felt this first hand – ever had your car tires feel rock solid in the cold and just skid everywhere? Remember how plastic bottles become so soft and squishy after being under the sun for a while? This whole change we see is because of something called thermal expansion which essentially a fancy word for saying when materials get hot they grow and it's only the seed that decides whether to become cidery corp pulp or cow food meat.
Thermal Expansion When a material changes size because of temperature, it is said to be thermally expanding. This movement increases when things heat up and their little pieces, which are called molecules or atoms; zip around faster. As they move the material, it takes up more space than before. Conversely, a cold environment will cause those tiny bits to move less and take up less room. Materials can expand when they are hot and contract when they are cold.
Special tool: thermal expansion testerTo uncover how temperature impacts materials, we use a unique instrument called the thermal expansion tester. This neat little device actually allows us to measure the expansion or shrinkage of a material as it gets hot and/or cold. This tells us the actual amount that size changes, which is crucial for many different reasons.
In very hot or cold places, scientists and engineers may use thermal expansion testers to ensure that the size of materials does not change. When materials grow or shrink too much — if they become either too large, or bioengineers break their own creations. This can be very expensive to repair, and you could get hurt in the process. If for example a metal part in an engine got too hot and expanded so much as to no longer fit properly the frame of that machine, its owner would experience failure.
A temperature change tester having an extremely high degree of accuracy in size changes is shown. It can test materials of temperatures from -150°C to 2500°C, which is very hot or extremely cold! This broad spectrum provides critical insights for scientists and engineers to predict how much a material should expand or contract when it is subjected to temperature changes. Having this knowledge is very useful if you are manufacturing parts for machines and buildings so that things fit together as they should.
The thermal growth tester also look at how components behave as soon they receive hot. The more they can be taken through cycles up and down in temperature, the better scientists are able to test how well materials perform under high-temperature conditions. This the important process for all eg: car engines getting over heat while running. Learning how these engine parts function in high temperatures allows them and any potential problems to be mitigated, the chances of breaking can also be prevented along with extending the life expectancy of said part.
